Andrew Bushnell - violin
Andrew is native to Seattle, WA and grew up listening to old records of Isaac Stern (1920-2001,) his violin hero, and at the sound of his mother playing the Mendelssohn E minor concerto around the home. He began his studies officially at age 10, thanks in part to the elementary string program through the Northshore School district, in the early 90s. His first private teachers were: Patricia Jaeger, graduate of the Eastman School of Music and Richard Skerlong, former principal violist of the Seattle Symphony; Gerry Marsh, director of the Cascade Youth Symphony and High School violin coach Cecilia Archuleta of the Northwest Sinfonietta.
In 2000 Andrew was accepted to the Wheaton Conservatory of Music, Illinois where he studied under Dr. Lee Joiner and served as co-concertmaster in the symphony orchestra. Following graduation in 2004 he went on to study at Cal State Sacramento under the nationally sought-after pedagogue Ian Swensen of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Under Swensen’s tutorage he studied and performed works such as the Ravel Sonata for violin and piano, Unaccompanied Bach and the Sibelius Violin Concerto.
The summer music festivals attended have been the Credo Chamber Music Festival, Oberlin, Ohio and the Musicorda Chamber Music Festival of western Massachusetts. At both Credo and Musicorda he had the great privilege of working with the great violin pedagogue James Buswell of the New England Conservatory of Music.
Grad School was a pivotal season in Andrew’s life where, after graduating from California State with a Master’s in Violin Performance, he left for China.
Andrew worked four years as a foreign music teacher at Sias University, located at the heart of the Chinese Han Civilization, Xin Zheng, Henan Province. He served on faculty as a violin teacher and concertmaster of the university’s symphony orchestra with which he went on tour through Henan province the Summer of 2009. He also had the opportunity to direct an English choir and taught Western Music appreciation. Presently, he continues to work on his spoken Mandarin and erhu, a classical Chinese instrument known as the Chinese two-stringed fiddle.
In 2011 he and his wife and daughter moved back to Seattle and began Bushnell Violin Studio initially based out of his aunt’s home in Kirkland. As of October of 2019, his studio became the One Sound School of Music Inc. which operates out of Monroe, Bothell, Redmond and has recently moved online as well, teaching violin, viola and a little erhu.
Andrew performs recitals regularly at his church in Redmond, WA and in 2014 he performed the much-loved Chinese piece Butterfly Lover’s Violin Concerto (Liang Zhu) at the downtown Seattle Library. Since then he has performed both the entire Sibelius and Tchaikovsky violin concertos, the later as a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Education & Biography
M.A. in Piano and Music Composition(Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, Moscow)
B.A. in Piano(Gnessin State Music College, Moscow)
I am a Piano teacher with close to 30 years of experience working in Seattle and Los Angeles areas.
Music has been a huge and the most incredible part of my life since I was 5. My mother was my first teacher. Then life presented me great and fabulous mentors both in Piano and Composition. I studied with the head of Composition Department at Moscow Conservatory whose professor was Shostakovich whose professor was Rimskiy-Korsakov. This succession is wholeheartedly appreciated. I have an extended experience as a concert and studio pianist as well as a concertmaster and accompanist to violinists, cellists, flutists, trios, quartets, quintets, opera, singers, and dancers.
Benefits of Piano Learning
Develops Creativity
Improves Learning Ability, Memory, Concentration, Coordination
Builds up Focus, Perseverance, Diligence
Approach
My approach is truly individual and based on the specific needs of each student. The atmosphere in class is inviting, fun and encouraging to learn.
Piano learning would not be possible without some elementary knowledge of Music Theory, Music Notation and Sight-Reading techniques which I introduce genteelly and painlessly during the process. We also discuss the time in history in which particular music was written as well as the biography of the composer to better understand and appreciate the works and mind set of the master. These all greatly influences the choice a student makes in a music piece interpretation. It brings so much fun and joy to a lesson.
With very young children we climb the beautiful but at times challenging ladder of Piano Learning through songs, rhythmics, and dancing games.
Certification
Certification is available for those who are interested to go through the ABRSM program – Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music – the world’s leading provider of graded music exams and assessments. ABRSM has over 100 years of experience and expertise in the field of music education and benefits from the authority of four of the leading conservatoires including Royal Academy of Music in London.
